What is Flyball?
Fast, Furious, and Fantastic Fun!
Think of Flyball as the ultimate high-speed relay race for dogs—a “tennis ball relay” that combines agility, speed, and precision. In a standard UK set-up, two teams of four dogs race side-by-side down a 51-foot lane. Each dog must clear four hurdles, trigger a spring-loaded Flyball box to release a tennis ball, catch it, and race back over the hurdles to the start line. The catch? The next dog can only be released once the previous one has crossed the line—leading to those heart-stopping “nose-to-nose” passes you see on Crufts TV coverage!
The Rules of the Game
In the UK, Flyball is governed by strict but fair rules (primarily through the BFA or UKFL) to ensure the safety and happiness of every dog.
- The “Height Dog”: One of the coolest parts of Flyball is that the hurdles are set based on the height of the smallest dog in the team. This makes “mini” dogs absolute superstars, as they help the bigger, faster dogs by keeping the jumps low!
- Precision Matters: If a dog misses a jump or drops the ball, they have to run again at the end. It’s a true team effort where every second counts.
- Inclusivity: Whether you have a lightning-fast Border Collie or a ball-obsessed Terrier, Flyball is open to all breeds. While dogs can start training young, they must be 12 months old to compete in “Starters” and 18 months for sanctioned tournaments to ensure their joints are fully developed and healthy.
It’s addictive, it’s loud, and it’s the most fun you can have on four paws. Whether you want to compete for titles or just want a fantastic way to burn off your dog’s energy, Flyball is the perfect “paws-on” sport!

Master Your Training
The FiveJays Training Passports
With 40 years of expertise, FiveJays Dog Training Club ensures your progress is clear, consistent, and rewarding. Our Training Passport Awards system breaks your journey into six levels: Foundation, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
Transparent Progress & Quality
We don’t hold you back. You and your trainer use the passport to track milestones in real-time, signing off exercises as you master them. To ensure the highest standards, an independent assessor occasionally visits classes to request random demonstrations. For our advanced levels, certain exercises are signed off by an independent examiner under competition-style conditions.
Start Your Journey
Complete a level by the end of the month to earn your certificate and optional rosette. You will receive a printed passport at your first session, but you can preview the requirements by downloading the PDF version in the members portal.
